Opening Day at NCH City Schools
As in previous years, Opening Day began with breakfast for the entire staff. Pictures were taken of new staff and service award recipients, followed by a program in the PAC.
The program began with the Marching Band playing the NCH Alma Mater/Fight Song and a welcome from Board President Penny Huber.
Dr. Kay Faris introduced the new staff for this year and Barbara Graves and Penny Huber distributed service awards to the “seasoned” staff.
Gary Gellert recognized the seven retiring staff members, one of which, Wayne Franklin, was in attendance.
High School Principal, Ann Brinkley introduced the Leadership Scholars Program; new to the school this year.
We were impressed by an NCH Scholarship Foundation presentation which identified previous recipients using a “where are they now?” format. Former student, Louis Walker, once again thanked the staff for their many contributions and identified how he has benefited.
Mr. Gellert distributed awards to the employees with 100% and 99% attendance. Linda Braunwart, NCH Alumni President, distributed Apple Awards to Kristen Brown, Pat Brewer and Mary Webb in addition to a number of teachers receiving “You Make a Difference” certificates.
Dr. O’Dell Owens, President of Cincinnati State College, was our guest speaker. He captivated, no seriously, he captivated the audience with his many stories of teachers and the impact they make on a child’s life. He spoke of the importance of not categorizing students as they all have different experiences away from school and also the important role the teacher plays in motivating, uplifting and identifying unique ways to reach students.
The Program ended with the song “For Every Mountain” sung by Ashley Thomas. All in all it was an electrifying Opening Day for the staff!
